A picturesque scene
A visit to Haarlem is not complete without a guided tour of De Adriaan windmill. It is a smock mill, a wooden towered mill, built in 1778 on the foundations of an ancient defensive tower near the centre of the town. Owing to its scenic location on the Spaarne river and its great height De Adriaan was one of the most striking features of Haarlem for centuries until the dramatic end to its existence in 1932, when the windmill burnt to the ground. Through the efforts of many local citizens, The Adriaan has now been rebuilt. Seventy years after the fire Haarlem's skyline, dominated by the Bavo Church, once again includes spinning sails of The Adriaan.

A tour of De Adriaan shows you the centuries old technology of turning wind into productive energy. Inside the windmill you will discover a great deal of information about windmills in general and De Adriaan in particular. Accompanied by a guide and with the help of models and visual presentations you will become acquainted with the ingenious way machines are powered by the turning sails. An unforgettable moment is when you step out onto the stage twelve meters above the river, where you have a spectacular view of the ancient town of Haarlem.

Anyone wanting to know more about Haarlem should not miss the audio visual presentation about the Spaarne river. It is as if you were sailing down the river and are viewing the most beautiful spots and most interesting buildings along its shores. After your tour of De Adriaan you can purchase in the shop downstairs souvenirs, post-cards and information about De Adriaan and windmills in general.

The mill will be functional on Saturdays if there is sufficient wind Groups tours may be arranged outside opening hours by prior arrangement
Entry
There is an entrance fee. Minors under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
